About New York Mets
Card #421 pairs a Yogi Berra manager photo with the Mets' 1975 team checklist, a season built for more than it delivered. That February the Mets acquired slugger Dave Kingman from the Giants for roughly $100,000, and he answered with a team-record 36 home runs, while Rusty Staub drove in 105 runs to become the first player in franchise history with a 100-RBI season. The pitching staff carried the club as always: Tom Seaver went 22-9 with a 2.38 ERA for his third Cy Young Award, joined by Jerry Koosman (14-13) and Jon Matlack (16-12). It added up to only an 82-80 finish, third in the NL East, 10½ games behind the first-place Pittsburgh Pirates. Berra, at 56-53, was fired on August 6; coach Roy McMillan ran the club the rest of the way.
