About Ed Kranepool
Ed Kranepool signed with the New York Mets as a 17-year-old bonus baby out of the Bronx's James Monroe High School in 1962, debuting that September and spending his entire 18-year career with the club — the last player left from the 1962 expansion team by the time he retired in 1979. A left-handed first baseman who also logged outfield innings, Kranepool made the 1965 National League All-Star team and was part of the 1969 "Miracle Mets," homering in Game 3 of that World Series upset over Baltimore. He drove in the pennant-clinching runs of the 1973 NLCS and reached a second World Series that fall. His 1975 Topps card, #324, caught him in the midst of his best offensive run: Kranepool batted .300 in both 1974 and 1975 while sharing first base with John Milner and Dave Kingman, and in 1974 he set the still-standing major-league record for single-season pinch-hit average (.486, 17-for-35), a big reason writers took to calling him "Steady Eddie." He retired in 1979 holding most of the Mets' career offensive records and entered the team's Hall of Fame in 1990.
