About Wayne Garrett

Ronald Wayne Garrett was born December 3, 1947, in Brooksville, Florida, following brothers Adrian and Jim into the Milwaukee Braves' farm system as their sixth-round pick in the 1965 draft. The Mets grabbed him for $25,000 in the 1968 Rule 5 draft, and the redheaded, freckle-faced rookie earned the nickname "Red" for his youthful looks. Garrett filled a utility role on the 1969 "Miracle Mets," clinching their NLCS sweep of Atlanta with a two-run homer off his former organization. He grew into the club's regular third baseman by 1972, platooning first with Jim Fregosi, then with newly acquired Joe Torre in 1975 — the arrangement pictured on his 1975 Topps card (#111). His signature moment came in the 1973 pennant race, relaying Cleon Jones' throw home to nail Richie Zisk in the famous "ball off the wall" play, then sparking the NLCS-clinching rally against Cincinnati with a leadoff double. He homered twice in that year's World Series before Montreal traded for him in 1976, closing his career with St. Louis and Japan's Chunichi Dragons.
