About Ron Hodges

Ron Hodges spent his entire 12-year big-league career as a backup catcher for the New York Mets. Drafted three times — by Baltimore in 1970 and by Kansas City and Atlanta in 1971 — without signing, he finally turned pro with the Mets out of Appalachian State University in January 1972. Injuries to Jerry Grote and Duffy Dyer rushed him to Shea Stadium in June 1973, and he caught a Tom Seaver complete game in his debut. That September he delivered a signature Mets moment: relaying a throw from Cleon Jones through Wayne Garrett to nail Pittsburgh's Richie Zisk at the plate in extra innings, then singling home the winning run in a game still recalled in franchise lore. He appeared in that fall's World Series. Splitting catching duties behind Grote and later John Stearns through 1984, Hodges hit .240 with a sturdy .342 on-base percentage before returning to Rocky Mount, Virginia, to sell real estate.
