About Dan Driessen

Dan Driessen signed with Cincinnati as an undrafted free agent out of Hardeeville, South Carolina, in 1969 and reached the majors on June 9, 1973, starting at third base before Pete Rose's arrival pushed him to first. He hit .301 as a rookie and earned the nickname "The Cobra" for the quick, lethal strike of his left-handed bat. Driessen became a fixture of the Big Red Machine, winning back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976; in the 1976 sweep of the Yankees he made history as the NL's first-ever designated hitter, batting .357 with a homer. As Cincinnati's full-time first baseman after Tony Perez was traded, he had his finest season in 1977, hitting .300 with 17 home runs and 91 RBI. Over 15 seasons with five clubs, capped by a third World Series with the 1987 Cardinals, he batted .267 with 153 homers. The Reds inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 2012. His 1975 Topps card, #133, catches him a year before that DH breakthrough.
