About Pete Rose

Pete Rose broke into the majors with the Cincinnati Reds in 1963, seizing the second-base job and earning NL Rookie of the Year honors. That same spring, Yankees ace Whitey Ford watched him sprint to first after a walk and mockingly dubbed him "Charlie Hustle," a nickname he wore proudly for life. A switch-hitter who played five different positions across 17 All-Star selections, including the 1974 nod flagged on his 1975 Topps #320 base card, Rose anchored the Big Red Machine to three batting titles and the 1973 NL MVP award, paired with that year's American League winner on his 1975 Topps #211 MVP-subset card. He famously bowled over catcher Ray Fosse to win the 1970 All-Star Game, was named 1975 World Series MVP, and won a third championship with the 1980 Phillies. Rose retired in 1986 as baseball's all-time hits leader (4,256), also topping games, at-bats, and outs, and owns the third-longest hit streak in history at 44 games. Banned from the game in 1989 over gambling and long barred from Hall of Fame consideration, he was posthumously reinstated by MLB in 2025; he died in 2024 at age 83.
