Card #108 in the 1975 Topps set shows left-hander Tom Hall in a Cincinnati Reds uniform, a photo already outdated - the Reds had dealt him to the Mets for pitcher Mac Scarce on April 15, 1975. Nicknamed "The Blade" for a wiry 6-foot, 150-pound frame - teammate Ted Uhlaender joked he "wouldn't sink two inches if he walked on quicksand" - Hall broke in with the Minnesota Twins in 1968 after a rapid climb through their farm system, then blossomed into one of the game's top relief arms after a December 1971 trade to Cincinnati for Wayne Granger. In 1972 he went 10-1 with a 2.61 ERA out of the Big Red Machine's bullpen, then starred that October: six relief outings and a 0.57 ERA across the NLCS and World Series, including a Game Two NLCS win over Pittsburgh. Hall pitched for the Reds, Mets, and Royals through 1977, finishing 52-33 with 32 saves and four postseason trips before a rotator cuff injury ended his career at 29. He spent his next two decades as a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier.
