About Cesar Geronimo

César Gerónimo built a 15-year career on his glove, not his bat — four straight Gold Gloves (1974-1977) patrolling center field for Cincinnati's Big Red Machine. The Yankees signed him in 1967 as a raw-armed pitcher-outfielder out of El Seibo, Dominican Republic, but he hit so poorly that Houston claimed him in the 1968 Rule 5 draft chiefly for his arm. The November 1971 trade that sent him, Joe Morgan, Jack Billingham, Denis Menke, and Ed Armbrister to Cincinnati for Lee May and Tommy Helms remade the Reds into champions. Geronimo anchored center field for pennant winners in 1972, 1975, and 1976, and scored the winning run in Game 3 of the 1975 World Series against Boston on Joe Morgan's single after the controversial Fisk-Armbrister collision; he hit .280 with two homers that Series and helped sweep the Yankees in 1976. He also owns an odd distinction: the 3,000th career strikeout victim for both Bob Gibson (1974) and Nolan Ryan (1980). Cincinnati inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 2008.
