About Ken Griffey
Cincinnati signed George Kenneth Griffey out of Donora, Pennsylvania, in the 29th round of the 1969 draft — a scout had simply clocked his speed to first base — and gave him a red jacket and five pairs of socks in place of a bonus. He climbed through Bradenton, Sioux Falls, Tampa, and Trois-Rivières before debuting with the Reds in August 1973. This card catches his 1975 breakout as the Reds' everyday right fielder, a move that let Sparky Anderson shift Cesar Geronimo to center, George Foster to left, and Pete Rose to third, completing the Big Red Machine lineup that won the World Series. Griffey hit .305 that year and a career-best .336 in 1976 — losing the NL batting title to Bill Madlock on the season's final day — as Cincinnati repeated as champions. A three-time All-Star (1976, 1977, 1980) and MVP of the 1980 All-Star Game, he later played for the Yankees, Braves, and Mariners, joining son Ken Griffey Jr. in Seattle in 1990 as the first father-son teammates in MLB history and hitting back-to-back homers with him that September. He entered the Reds Hall of Fame in 2004.
