About Joe Morgan
Joe Leonard Morgan, born September 19, 1943, in Bonham, Texas, starred at Oakland's Castlemont High School before Houston signed him as an amateur free agent in 1962. The 5-foot-7 second baseman debuted with the Colt .45s in 1963, won NL Rookie of the Year in 1965, and made the All-Star team in 1966 and 1970 before a blockbuster November 1971 trade sent him to Cincinnati. There he ignited the Big Red Machine alongside Pete Rose, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez, starting an eight-year All-Star run (1972-79) that includes the 1974 selection flagged on his 1975 Topps card. Morgan won back-to-back NL MVP awards in 1975 and 1976, drove in the Series-winning run in Game 7 of the 1975 World Series, and helped Cincinnati capture consecutive championships. Nicknamed "Little Joe" for his compact stature, he adopted the chicken-flap batting stance at teammate Nellie Fox's suggestion, won five straight Gold Gloves, and finished with a .271 average, 268 home runs and 689 stolen bases. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1990, his first year of eligibility.
