1975 Topps #65 Don Gullett

About Don Gullett
Don Gullett was already the ace left-hander of Cincinnati's Big Red Machine when his 1975 Topps card (#65) hit shelves, just 24 years old. The Reds took him in the first round of the 1969 draft out of McKell High School in South Shore, Kentucky, and he broke into the majors at 19 in 1970 -- young enough that manager Sparky Anderson took to calling him "Young Don Gullett," a nickname that followed him through his Reds years. He worked out of the bullpen as a rookie, moved into the rotation in 1971, and by 1974 was an 18-game winner who claimed the National League Player of the Month award that July. Gullett helped Cincinnati to pennants in 1970, 1972, 1975 and 1976, starting three games against Boston in the 1975 World Series -- including the decisive Game Seven -- as the Reds won it in seven. He signed with the Yankees as a free agent after the 1976 season and won two more championships before a torn rotator cuff ended his career in 1978 at age 27. He later returned to Cincinnati as pitching coach and was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 2002.
