1975 Topps #345 Clay Carroll

About Clay Carroll
Clay Palmer Carroll, a right-hander out of Clanton, Alabama, broke into pro ball in 1961 after Braves scout Dixie Walker signed him for $1,000, then reached the majors with Milwaukee in 1964. Dealt to Cincinnati in a 1968 trade for Milt Pappas, he became the workhorse of the Reds bullpen, teammates nicknaming him "Hawk" for his hawk-like profile. Carroll saved a then-club-record 119 games from 1968 through 1975 and made the NL All-Star team in 1971 and 1972, leading the league with 37 saves in the latter season en route to Sporting News Fireman of the Year honors. In October 1970 he won Game Four of the World Series against Baltimore, and in October 1975 he closed out Game Seven against Boston to clinch Cincinnati's first championship in 35 years — part of a 1.39 ERA over 22 career postseason appearances. His 1975 Topps card, issued the year of that title, captures him mid-career with the Big Red Machine; he later joined the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1980.
