1975 Topps #396 Fred Norman

About Fred Norman
Fredie Hubert Norman broke in with the Kansas City Athletics in 1962 but spent most of the next decade bouncing between the minors and five big-league organizations before a serious shoulder injury reshaped him into a craftier pitcher under Dodgers system instructor Roger Craig and, later, Cardinals manager Warren Spahn, who helped him refine the screwball that became his signature pitch. The 5-foot-8 left-hander finally found a home in June 1973, when the Padres sent him to Cincinnati for outfielder Gene Locklear, a minor leaguer, and cash. He won seven of his first nine Reds starts and never looked back, anchoring the Big Red Machine rotation for seven seasons. Norman started Game Two of the 1975 NLCS and made three World Series appearances as Cincinnati won back-to-back titles in 1975 and 1976. In 1975 he led the club with 119 strikeouts en route to a 12-4 record. He finished his career 104-103 with 1,303 strikeouts and was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 2018.
