1975 Topps #87 George Foster

About George Foster
George Arthur Foster, born December 1, 1948, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was a third-round pick of the San Francisco Giants in 1968 out of El Camino Junior College. Traded to Cincinnati on May 29, 1971, in a deal for Frank Duffy and Vern Geishert, he took over left field for the Big Red Machine by 1975, pictured on card #87 of that year's Topps set. Foster made a leaping catch and threw out Denny Doyle at the plate to help save Game 6 of the 1975 World Series, then drove in four runs as the Reds swept to their second straight title in 1976. His 1977 season remains one of the era's best: 52 home runs, 149 RBI, and a .320 average earned him the National League Most Valuable Player Award, and on September 23 he became the first player since Willie Mays to reach 50 homers in a season. A five-time All-Star, Foster led the NL in home runs twice (1977-78) and RBI three times (1976-78), finishing his career with 348 homers and 1,239 RBI. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 2003.
