About Joe Lis

Joe Lis signed with the Phillies out of Somerville, New Jersey, in 1964 and spent six years in the minors — twice topping his league in home runs, with 33 for Bakersfield in 1967 and a career-high 36 for Eugene in 1970 — before debuting in September 1970. Traded to Minnesota with Ken Reynolds and Ken Sanders for César Tovar after the 1972 season, the first baseman backed up Harmon Killebrew and had his best big-league year in 1973: a .245 average with career highs of nine homers and 25 RBIs. Sold to Cleveland for cash in June 1974, Lis spent most of 1975 hitting at Oklahoma City before a September call-up, when he batted .308 with two homers in nine games behind veteran Boog Powell — the stretch pictured on this 1975 Topps Indians card. He wrapped up his eight-year major-league career with Seattle in 1977, then closed out professionally in Japan with the Kintetsu Buffaloes in 1978 and the Triple-A champion Evansville Triplets in 1979.
