About Cleveland Indians

The Indians opened 1975 with baseball history in the dugout: Frank Robinson, purchased from the Angels the previous September, took over as player-manager, becoming the major leagues' first Black manager. He delivered a storybook debut on Opening Day, April 8, homering in his first at-bat as Cleveland beat the Yankees 5-3 in front of over 56,000 fans at Municipal Stadium, with Rachel Robinson among the dignitaries on hand. Robinson penciled himself into the lineup as designated hitter throughout the year while running a roster built around Buddy Bell, George Hendrick, Boog Powell and Rico Carty, plus ace Gaylord Perry until his June trade to Texas. Cleveland finished 79-80, fourth in the AL East but its best mark in over a decade, a foundation Robinson would build on in 1976.
