1975 Topps #159 Steve Arlin

About Steve Arlin
Steven Ralph Arlin pitched six major league seasons, 1969-1974, mostly for the expansion-era San Diego Padres before a June 1974 trade sent him to Cleveland, the club on his 1975 Topps card #159 issued the year after his final big-league appearance. A two-time College World Series pitcher for Ohio State, he was named the 1966 CWS Most Valuable Player after leading the Buckeyes to the national title. Arlin negotiated an unusual arrangement with the Phillies, who drafted him in 1966, to finish dental school each spring before reporting to the minors; left unprotected, he was taken by San Diego in the 1968 expansion draft. Pitching for cellar-dwelling Padres teams, the right-hander led the National League in losses in both 1971 and 1972 despite ERAs under 3.60, and on July 18, 1972, lost a no-hit bid against Philadelphia when Denny Doyle singled with two out in the ninth. He retired after the 1974 season to practice dentistry full-time, finishing 34-67 with 463 strikeouts.
