About Oscar Gamble
Oscar Gamble broke into pro ball after Cubs scout Buck O'Neil spotted him on Alabama semipro diamonds and signed him in the 16th round of the 1968 draft; he debuted with Chicago in 1969. After three seasons in Philadelphia, a December 1972 trade for Del Unser sent him to Cleveland, where he spent 1973-1975 — the tenure this Base card captures — developing into a genuine power threat. Dealt to the Yankees for 1976, he helped New York win its first pennant in twelve years, then set his career high with 31 home runs and 83 RBI for the 1977 White Sox, posting the American League's best home-run ratio that season. Back with New York from 1979-1984, he reached two more World Series. Gamble retired with 200 home runs in roughly 4,500 at-bats and more career walks than strikeouts, a ratio that earned him the nickname "Ratio Man"; Yankees broadcaster Phil Rizzuto separately dubbed him "Big O." His towering Afro remains one of the defining images of 1970s baseball. He died in 2018 at age 68.
