About Milt Wilcox
Milton Edward Wilcox, a right-hander out of Crooked Oak High School in Oklahoma, was picked by the Cincinnati Reds in the second round of the 1968 draft. Called up in September 1970, he won the clinching Game 3 of that year's NLCS in relief and started Game 2 of the World Series against Baltimore. Traded to Cleveland that December, Wilcox became a rotation regular by 1972 — his 1975 Topps card catches him in an Indians uniform during the arm-injury years (strep throat, a torn muscle, tendinitis) that slowed his rise before Chicago acquired him in February 1975. He resurfaced with Detroit in 1977 and pitched nine solid seasons there, headlined by a near-perfect game on April 15, 1983 — Jerry Hairston Sr.'s ninth-inning single was the only blemish — and a 17-8 mark in 1984, when he beat San Diego in Game 3 of the World Series as the Tigers won it all. He closed out his 16-year career with the Seattle Mariners in 1986, finishing 119-113 with a 4.07 ERA.
