About Jose Cardenal
José Rosario Domec Cardenal left Matanzas, Cuba in 1960, not yet 17, signing with the Giants for $200. His breakout came at Class-D El Paso in 1961, where a league-record 35 home runs earned MVP honors and the nickname "Jonronero" (home-run hitter) from Sun Kings fans. A slight 5-foot-10, 150-pound outfielder with blazing speed and a rifle arm, he broke in with San Francisco in 1963 and bounced through the Angels, Indians, Cardinals and Brewers before a December 1971 trade to the Cubs made him a Wrigley Field fixture and fan favorite. His 1975 Topps card catches him at his peak: that season he set career highs with a .317 average and 182 hits, following a 1973 campaign in which he led Chicago in average, doubles and steals and was named the club's Player of the Year. He retired with a .275 average, 1,913 hits and 329 stolen bases over 18 seasons, and was inducted into the Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame in 2022.
