About Rick Stelmaszek
Rick Stelmaszek's playing career was a brief one - a .170 average over 60 games with four organizations - but he left a lasting mark on baseball as a coach. Drafted by the Washington Senators in the 11th round in 1967 out of Mendel Catholic High School in Chicago, the left-handed-hitting catcher debuted with Washington in 1971 and moved through the Rangers and Angels organizations before the Cubs acquired him from California, sending Horacio Piña the other way on July 28, 1974. His 1975 Topps card, #338, captures that short Chicago stint, during which he hit his only career home run, off future Hall of Famer Don Sutton on August 20, 1974. After his playing days ended in 1978, Stelmaszek turned to coaching and became a Minnesota institution, serving as the Twins' bullpen coach for 32 consecutive seasons, from 1981 through 2012, and winning two World Series titles, in 1987 and 1991.
