1975 Topps #233 Billy Grabarkewitz

About Billy Grabarkewitz
A 12th-round pick by the Dodgers out of St. Mary's University in the 1966 draft, Billy Grabarkewitz broke through in 1970 when an injury to close friend Ted Sizemore opened the Los Angeles third-base job. He responded with a .289 average, 17 home runs, a team-leading .399 on-base percentage, and 92 runs scored, earning a spot on the NL All-Star team. He entered that game in the seventh inning and delivered the two-out single in the twelfth that set up the famous Pete Rose–Ray Fosse collision at home plate. His habit of hitting home runs on Sundays — 14 of 24 during the 1967 minor-league season — had already earned him the nickname "Billy Sunday." Shoulder and ankle injuries then reduced him to a part-timer with the Angels and Phillies before he joined the Cubs in mid-1974, taking over second base and hitting .248 down the stretch, the season pictured on his 1975 Topps card. He closed out his seven-year career with Oakland in 1975.
