About Diego Segui
Diego Seguí grew up on a farm outside Holguín, Cuba, playing pickup games with just five or six boys a side before Kansas City's organization signed him in 1958. He reached the majors in 1962 as a right-hander built around a forkball, and over 16 seasons with six franchises went 92-111 with 1,298 strikeouts and 71 saves, leading the American League with a 2.56 ERA for Oakland in 1970. Seguí holds a one-of-a-kind distinction: he took the mound in the very first game ever played by both the Seattle Pilots, in 1969, and the Seattle Mariners, in 1977, which earned him the nickname "the Ancient Mariner" after that second Seattle opener. His only World Series appearance came in Game Five for Boston in 1975, working out of an eighth-inning jam against Cincinnati. He kept pitching in Mexico and Venezuela into his forties and was inducted into the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. This 1975 Topps card, #232, captures him in his second season with the Red Sox.
