About Boston Red Sox
Darrell Johnson's Red Sox delivered New England's first American League East crown, going 95-65 after an April swoon left them a game under .500. Rookies Fred Lynn and Jim Rice - the "Gold Dust Twins" - powered the turnaround: Lynn hit .331 with 21 homers and 105 RBIs to become the first player ever named MVP and Rookie of the Year in the same season, while Rice added 22 homers and 102 RBIs before a broken hand, courtesy of a Vern Ruhle pitch on September 21, ended his year. With Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk, and ace Luis Tiant leading the way, Boston swept Oakland in the ALCS, then pushed Cincinnati's Big Red Machine to a classic seven-game World Series - Fisk's extra-inning Game 6 home run forcing the finale before the Reds prevailed.
