About Dick Drago

Richard Anthony Drago broke in with the Kansas City Royals in 1969 after winning 15 games in three straight minor-league seasons in the Detroit Tigers' system. He developed into Kansas City's workhorse, going 17-11 in 1971. Traded to Boston for Marty Pattin in October 1973, Drago became the Red Sox's top reliever, and his 1975 Topps card (#333) catches him fresh off the American League pennant. That October he saved both Red Sox wins over Oakland in the ALCS, freezing Billy Williams with a fastball while holding runner Tommy Harper close to first in Game Two, then taking a Williams liner off the shin in Game Three before hobbling over to cover first for the out. In the World Series against Cincinnati, he worked three innings of Game Six's classic extra-inning epic, setting down Hall of Famers Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, and Tony Perez in order in the ninth. Drago pitched 13 big-league seasons for five clubs, 1969-1981, and is remembered as the last pitcher to surrender a home run to Hank Aaron, on July 20, 1976.
