About Dwight Evans
Dwight Michael "Dewey" Evans broke into the majors with the Red Sox on September 16, 1972, after Boston selected him in the fifth round of the 1969 draft out of Chatsworth High School in California. He earned his "Dewey" nickname from Winston-Salem manager Don Lock in 1971, who was already calling teammates "Newie" and "Louie." By the time of this 1975 card, Evans had settled in as Boston's regular right fielder and helped the Red Sox to the AL East title and a seven-game World Series against Cincinnati, famously robbing Joe Morgan with a diving catch and relay throw in the classic Game Six before Carlton Fisk's walk-off homer. Evans blossomed into one of the game's most complete outfielders, winning eight Gold Gloves from 1976 to 1985 and two Silver Sluggers, making three All-Star teams, and leading the American League in home runs in 1981. He closed a 20-year career split between Boston (1972-90) and Baltimore (1991) with 385 homers, 2,446 hits, and a .272 average, ranking second in Red Sox games played behind only Carl Yastrzemski.
