About Mike Torrez
Mike Torrez, born August 28, 1946, in Topeka, Kansas, was a right-handed pitcher who signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1964 and debuted with them in 1967. Traded to the Montreal Expos in 1971 — the club pictured on this 1975 Topps card — he won 16 games in 1972 and 15 in 1974 before Montreal dealt him to the Baltimore Orioles for 1975, where he posted a career-best 20 wins and a .690 winning percentage. Dealt to Oakland in 1976 as part of the trade that brought Reggie Jackson to Baltimore, Torrez was traded to the New York Yankees in 1977 and reached his only postseason, winning two games as New York beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in a six-game World Series. Signing with the rival Boston Red Sox that winter, he became forever linked to New England baseball lore on October 2, 1978, surrendering the decisive home run to Bucky Dent in the Yankees-Red Sox AL East tiebreaker. He pitched through 1984 with the Mets and Athletics, finishing 185-160 with a 3.96 ERA and 1,404 strikeouts.
