1975 Topps #286 Mike Jorgensen

About Mike Jorgensen
Michael Jorgensen was born August 16, 1948, in Passaic, New Jersey, and signed with the Mets out of Francis Lewis High School after New York's fourth-round pick in the 1966 draft. He debuted in September 1968 but didn't become a regular until Montreal acquired him, Tim Foli, and Ken Singleton in the April 1972 trade that sent Rusty Staub to the Mets. Jorgensen won a Gold Glove at first base for the Expos in 1973, then hit a career-high .310 with a club-record .444 on-base percentage in 1974 — a season that ended with him taking Bob Gibson deep for a go-ahead eighth-inning homer on October 1 that helped sink St. Louis' pennant chase. His 1975 Topps card followed an 18-homer, 67-RBI encore. He later played for Oakland, Texas, the Mets again, Atlanta, and St. Louis, surviving a frightening 1979 beaning that left a blood clot near his brain, and reached his only World Series with the 1985 Cardinals. Jorgensen managed St. Louis for part of 1995 and spent decades afterward in the club's front office.
