1975 Topps #229 Barry Foote

About Barry Foote
Barry Clifton Foote was Montreal's third overall pick in the 1970 draft, chosen out of Smithfield-Selma High School in North Carolina. He debuted with the Expos on September 14, 1973, and took over as starting catcher in 1974, batting .262 with 11 home runs, 60 RBI, and a league-leading 83 assists — a season that earned him a spot on the Topps All-Star Rookie Team and prompted manager Gene Mauch to call him "the next Johnny Bench." That trophy appears on his 1975 Topps card (#229). Foote's follow-up season collapsed to a .194 average and knee surgery, and rookie Gary Carter — shifted to right field in 1975 to keep Foote catching — soon took over the job. Traded to Philadelphia in 1977, he backed up Bob Boone on the 1978 NL East champions; dealt to the Cubs in 1979, he set career highs with 132 games and 16 homers, including an eight-RBI game against St. Louis. He finished his ten-year career with the 1981 Yankees, appearing in that year's World Series, then went on to manage and coach in four organizations.
