1975 Topps #318 Ernie McAnally

About Ernie McAnally
Ernest Lee McAnally, a 6-foot-1 right-hander from Pittsburg, Texas, was drafted by the Mets in 1966 out of Paris Junior College as a catcher before converting to the mound. Montreal took him in the 1968 expansion draft; he briefly quit the game in 1969 for a better-paying job as an insurance adjustor before returning. McAnally reached the majors in 1971 and had his best season, going 11-12 with a 3.90 ERA and eight complete games, rallying from a 1-7 start with the support of an actual Ernie McAnally Fan Club. Across four seasons (1971-74) with Expos clubs that never had a winning record, he went 30-49 with a 4.03 ERA and 351 strikeouts, and was notably tough on Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, limiting him to one hit in 15 at-bats. Montreal sold him to Cleveland after 1974; a rotator cuff injury ended his career in the minors the next year, closing out an Expos-only run captured on his 1975 Topps card.
