About Hal Breeden
Harold Noel Breeden, a right-handed hitter who threw left-handed, signed with the Milwaukee Braves in 1963 and hit 37 home runs for Triple-A Richmond in 1970, production that got him traded to the Cubs for future Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm. He debuted on April 7, 1971, and was dealt to Montreal in April 1972. Playing mostly off the bench at first base, Breeden had his best season in 1973, batting .275 with 15 home runs and the top slugging percentage of any Expo who played 100-plus games; that July 13 he also tied Joe Cronin's record of two pinch-hit homers in a doubleheader. He gained an unwanted footnote in medical history on July 17, 1974, as the Dodger Stadium batter facing Tommy John when John's elbow gave out mid-pitch, the injury that led to the first Tommy John surgery. Breeden closed his major-league career in 1975, the year Topps issued this card, then played three seasons in Japan before serving twenty years as sheriff of Lee County, Georgia.
