About Don DeMola

Don DeMola, a hard-throwing right-hander from Commack, New York, was a seventh-round pick of the New York Yankees out of Commack High School South in the 1970 draft. The Yankees released him after just two Single-A seasons, and DeMola spent the next year replacing windshields at an auto body shop, unable to stop thinking about baseball. A tryout arranged by his old high school coach led to a minor-league contract with the Montreal Expos, and he reached the majors fast, debuting in April 1974 at age 21 and quickly becoming a workhorse out of Gene Mauch's bullpen. Over 1974-75 he went 5-7 with a 3.77 ERA and 110 strikeouts in 155.1 innings. Because he had already exceeded rookie limits in 1974, his 1975 Topps card marks his only Topps issue. Elbow pain that required off-season surgery, plus a broken hand suffered in a clubhouse fight, derailed him; he pitched in Montreal's farm system through 1978 without another big-league call-up.
