About Bob Bailey

Bob Bailey signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates for $175,000 in 1961, a bonus so large it followed the California prep star — known back home as "the Babe Ruth of Long Beach" for his prodigious high school power — into pro ball. He debuted with Pittsburgh in 1962 at age 19, was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Maury Wills after 1966, and found his footing once Montreal claimed him for its 1969 expansion roster. Batting fifth in the Expos' first-ever game, Bailey lined the first pitch he saw from Tom Seaver into the gap for a double — the first hit in franchise history — then anchored third base for Montreal through 1975, his best year coming in 1973 with 25 homers and 86 RBIs. Traded to Cincinnati that December, he won a World Series ring with the 1976 Big Red Machine before closing his 17-year career with the Red Sox in 1978. This 1975 Topps card captures his final season in an Expos uniform.
