About Steve Rogers
The Montreal Expos took Rogers fourth overall in the secondary phase of the 1971 draft out of the University of Tulsa, where he was an All-American pitcher. He debuted on July 18, 1973, and turned in one of the finest rookie seasons in franchise history: a 10-5 record and 1.54 ERA that finished second in NL Rookie of the Year voting. That summer, teammates Ron Fairly and Tim Foli hung the nickname "Cy," after Cy Young, on him, and it stuck for the rest of his career. Rogers spent all thirteen big-league seasons with Montreal, the only Expo with a ten-plus-year career, making five All-Star teams (1974, 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983) and leading the National League with a 2.40 ERA in 1982. He was the Expos' ace in their only postseason run, going 3-1 in four outings during the 1981 playoffs before surrendering the pennant-deciding home run to Rick Monday in Game 5 of the NLCS. He finished 158-152 with a 3.17 ERA and 1,621 strikeouts, and was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005. This 1975 Topps card, his third Topps issue, catches him early in that run as Montreal's rising young right-hander.
