About Willie Davis
Willie Davis broke in with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1960 and by 1961 had taken over center field from Duke Snider, a post he held for 13 years. A slashing left-handed hitter with blazing speed, he helped the Dodgers to three National League pennants and two World Series titles, driving in the go-ahead run in Game 2 and the clinching run in Game 4 of the 1963 Series. He made two All-Star teams (1971, 1973), won three straight Gold Gloves (1971-73), and his 31-game hitting streak in 1969 still stands as the Dodgers' franchise record. Teammates called him '3-Dog,' a name he gave himself for wearing uniform number 3 and for his knack of legging out triples, a category he led the NL in twice. Traded to Montreal for Mike Marshall after the 1973 season, Davis wears the Expos cap on this card after a 1974 campaign in which he led the club in hits, runs and RBI. He retired with 2,561 hits and 398 stolen bases, but despite a career WAR north of 60, he has never appeared on a Hall of Fame ballot.
