About Bill Melton

Bill Melton signed with the White Sox as an amateur free agent out of Citrus College in 1964 and worked through five up-and-down minor-league seasons before sticking at third base in Chicago for good in 1969. A powerful right-handed hitter with an erratic glove, Melton became the first player in White Sox history to top 30 home runs in a season (33, in 1970), then in 1971 became the first Sox player to lead the American League outright in homers, again with 33, earning his only All-Star selection. Sportswriters had taken to calling him "Beltin' Melton" for the power stroke that carried him to the crown. A back injury suffered trying to catch his young son falling from the family garage in late 1971 wrecked his 1972 season and sapped his power for good; he was traded to California in 1976 and closed out his ten-year career with Cleveland in 1977. Melton retired as the White Sox's all-time home run leader with 154 and later spent two decades as a White Sox pre- and postgame television analyst.
