About Bucky Dent

Card #299 carries the Topps All-Star Rookie trophy, recognizing Russell Earl "Bucky" Dent's strong 1974 season, when he hit .274 across 154 games and finished runner-up for AL Rookie of the Year with the White Sox. Chicago had taken Dent, a Hialeah High School product, in the first round of the 1970 draft; he debuted June 1, 1973, and made his first All-Star team as Chicago's shortstop in 1975. After a contract standoff, the White Sox traded him to the Yankees in April 1977 for Oscar Gamble, LaMarr Hoyt, and cash. Dent anchored New York's infield through back-to-back championships in 1977 and 1978, then delivered one of baseball's most famous swings — a three-run homer off Mike Torrez that beat Boston in the 1978 AL East tie-breaker at Fenway, forever earning him the nickname "Bucky Effing Dent" among Red Sox fans. He followed with a .417 World Series and was named Series MVP as the Yankees beat the Dodgers again. A three-time All-Star (1975, 1980, 1981), Dent later managed the Yankees in 1989-90. His original nickname came from his grandmother, who called him "Cooterbuck" before he shortened it to Bucky.
