1975 Topps #219 Ed Herrmann

About Ed Herrmann
A left-handed-hitting catcher out of Crawford High School in San Diego, Ed Herrmann signed with the Milwaukee Braves in 1964 and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox that same year. He debuted with Chicago in 1967, returned to the minors in 1968, then took over as the White Sox' starting catcher in 1969, hitting a career-best .283 with 19 home runs in 1970. Herrmann earned a reputation as one of the American League's top knuckleball catchers, working behind Wilbur Wood through Wood's run of four straight 20-win seasons, and he was named to the 1974 AL All-Star team. Card #219 pictures his final season as a Sox regular — that April he was traded to the Yankees after a spring-training contract dispute, then moved on to the Angels and the Astros, where he caught Larry Dierker's 1976 no-hitter, before finishing with the Expos in 1978. He retired with 80 home runs and later scouted for the Kansas City Royals, coaching youth ball in San Diego until his death in 2013.
