About Chicago White Sox

The 1975 Topps team card catches the White Sox in Chuck Tanner's last season on the South Side, a rebuilding club that finished 75-86, fifth in the AL West and 22½ games behind the champion Oakland Athletics. The rotation still leaned on two mid-70s workhorses: knuckleballer Wilbur Wood, who led the league in starts for a fourth straight year but slipped to 16-20 with a 4.11 ERA, and 36-year-old Jim Kaat, who won 20 games for the second season running (20-14, 3.11 ERA in 303⅔ innings). Tanner had shifted hard-throwing Rich Gossage to the bullpen full-time, and Gossage rewarded him with a 1.84 ERA and 26 saves. Second baseman Jorge Orta anchored the offense, batting .304 with a team-high 165 hits and 83 RBI. New owner Bill Veeck bought the club that winter, closing the book on Tanner's six years running the White Sox.
