1975 Topps #184 Jorge Orta

About Jorge Orta
Jorge Orta Núñez broke into the majors in 1972 as a 21-year-old shortstop, signed by the Chicago White Sox out of the Mexican League without ever playing in the American minors. Shifted to second base in 1973, he blossomed the next year, batting .316, and by the summer captured on this 1975 Topps card #184 he was hitting .304 and earning his first All-Star selection, though a pulled hamstring kept him out of the game itself. Orta spent eight seasons in Chicago before moving on to Cleveland, the Dodgers, Toronto, and finally Kansas City, making a second All-Star team with the Indians in 1980 after tying an AL record with six hits in one game. As Hal McRae's platoon partner at designated hitter, he helped the Royals win the 1985 World Series, a title forever tied to Game Six, when umpire Don Denkinger called Orta safe at first on a bang-bang grounder that replays showed he should have been out on, a disputed call that swung the Series Kansas City's way. He retired with 1,619 hits and a .278 average over sixteen seasons, and was inducted into the Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996.
