About Stan Bahnsen
Stan Bahnsen broke into the majors with the New York Yankees in September 1966 and won American League Rookie of the Year in 1968, going 17-12 with a 2.05 ERA and striking out twelve in a three-hit shutout of Boston that August. Nebraska fans had already dubbed him the "Bahnsen Burner" for his blazing fastball. Traded to the Chicago White Sox in December 1971, he became a workhorse under manager Chuck Tanner, making 130 starts over three-plus seasons, headlined by a 21-16 record in 1972 and a near no-hitter broken up with two outs in the ninth in 1973. His 1975 Topps card (#161) catches him in that White Sox stretch, shortly before a June 1975 trade sent him to Oakland. He closed out his 16-year career with the A's, Expos, Angels, and Phillies, finishing 146-149 with 1,359 strikeouts and 20 saves.
