About Ron Santo

Ron Santo signed with the Cubs as a free agent in 1959 and debuted on June 26, 1960, at Forbes Field, driving in five runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Pirates. He anchored third base in Chicago for fourteen seasons, making nine All-Star teams and winning five straight Gold Gloves (1964-1968) while leading the National League in assists and putouts year after year; he remains the only third baseman in major-league history to post eight consecutive 90-RBI seasons, from 1963 through 1970. He finished with 342 home runs, 1,331 RBIs and a .277 average, all compiled while privately battling type 1 diabetes, a condition he concealed from the public until 1971. Traded to the crosstown White Sox for the 1974 season, Santo shifted to second base behind incumbent third baseman Bill Melton and retired after that lone season on the South Side - the club pictured on this 1975 Topps card, his final issue, in place of the Cubs uniform fans knew him in. Santo died in 2010 and was elected to the Hall of Fame two years later by the Golden Era Committee, with 93.8% of the vote.
