About Terry Forster
Terry Forster was a hard-throwing left-handed reliever out of Santana High School in Santee, California, taken by the Chicago White Sox in the second round of the 1970 draft. He reached the majors at 19 in 1971 and quickly emerged as Chicago's top fireman, finishing second in the American League in saves with 29 in 1972 and leading the league with 24 saves in 1974 — the feat honored on his 1975 Topps League Leaders card (#313), paired with his 1975 base card (#137). An arm injury cost him most of 1975, opening the closer's role to teammate Rich Gossage. Traded to Pittsburgh after the 1976 season, Forster signed with the Dodgers the following year and reached two World Series, winning a ring in 1981. He closed out his 16-year career with three sharp seasons in Atlanta and a final stop in California. Remarkably for a pitcher, his .397 career batting average remains the highest in major-league history among players with at least 15 seasons of service.
