About Ken Henderson
Ken Henderson broke into pro ball as a $50,000 bonus signee out of Clairemont High School in San Diego, inked by the Giants on June 20, 1964. Scouts tabbed the switch-hitting, five-tool outfielder as heir apparent to Willie Mays in center field, a label he carried for years even as Mays kept playing into 1971. Henderson debuted with San Francisco in 1965 at age 18 and helped the Giants win the 1971 NL West before a November 1972 trade brought him to the White Sox. His finest season came in 1974: a .292 average, 20 home runs, and 95 RBI that placed him 19th in AL MVP voting, the form pictured on his 1975 Topps card (#59). Later trades sent him to Atlanta, Texas, and - via a four-team, eleven-player blockbuster in March 1978 - to the Mets, before he closed out his 16-year career with the Reds and Cubs, playing his last game in 1980. He finished with a .257 average, 122 home runs, and 576 RBI, and later spent years in the Giants' front office, earning a World Series ring in 2010.
