About Pat Kelly
Harold Patrick Kelly broke in with the Minnesota Twins in 1967, then became an everyday outfielder for the expansion Kansas City Royals before the left-handed hitter arrived in Chicago in a trade before the 1971 season. His 1975 Topps card catches him in his age-30 season with the White Sox, where he split time in right field and at designated hitter after making his only All-Star team in 1973. A patient hitter with speed -- he stole 25 or more bases four times and posted a .354 career on-base percentage -- Kelly was traded to Baltimore after the 1976 season and helped the Orioles reach the 1979 World Series, batting a career-high .536 slugging percentage that year in a seven-game loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He closed out his 15-year career with Cleveland in 1981, finishing with a .264 average, 76 home runs and 418 RBI. Kelly, who became a born-again Christian in 1975 and later an ordained minister, was the younger brother of Pro Football Hall of Famer Leroy Kelly.
