About Jim Mason
James Percy Mason, born August 14, 1950, in Mobile, Alabama, was a slick-fielding shortstop whose bat could never keep pace. The Washington Senators drafted him in the second round in 1968, and he debuted with the club in its final season in Washington before the franchise moved to Texas as the Rangers. Sold to the Yankees for $100,000 in December 1973, Mason won the starting shortstop job in 1974 and turned in the best year of his career, hitting .250 and tying a major-league record with four doubles in one game against his former Rangers teammates on July 8. His 1975 Topps card, #136, catches him fresh off that career year, before his batting collapsed to .152 and cost him the job. Mason stuck around for New York's 1976 pennant, and in his only career postseason at-bat he homered off Cincinnati's Pat Zachry in the Yankees' four-game World Series loss, the 500th home run in Series history. He played through 1979 with Toronto, Texas, and Montreal, finishing a .203 career hitter.
