About Ron Blomberg
Ron Blomberg, pictured on card #68 in the 1975 Topps set as a New York Yankee, carved out a unique place in baseball history as the first designated hitter to bat in a major-league game. The Yankees made the Atlanta-born outfielder/first baseman the No. 1 overall pick in the 1967 draft out of Druid Hills High School, and he debuted with New York on September 10, 1969. Injuries limited him to eight big-league seasons — six full years with the Yankees (1969, 1971-1976) and one with the Chicago White Sox in 1978 — but his bat, a remarkably quick left-handed swing, produced a .293 career average with 52 home runs and 224 RBIs. His signature moment came April 6, 1973, at Fenway Park, when he drew a bases-loaded walk off Luis Tiant as MLB's inaugural DH; the bat he used now sits in the Hall of Fame. Longtime Yankees broadcaster Phil Rizzuto nicknamed him "Boomer" for his towering upper-deck home runs. Blomberg later managed Israel's Bet Shemesh Blue Sox to the 2007 Israel Baseball League title.
