1975 Topps #113 Elliott Maddox

About Elliott Maddox
Elliott Maddox entered pro ball as a multi-sport star at Union High School in New Jersey, then led the Big Ten with a .467 average at Michigan before the Tigers made him their 1968 first-round secondary-phase pick. He debuted with Detroit in 1970, was swept up in the trade that sent Denny McLain to Washington, moved with that franchise to Texas, and in 1974 was purchased by the Yankees, the club he had idolized growing up. That 1974 season, pictured on this card, was his best: a .303 average, a .395 on-base percentage and an eighth-place finish in AL MVP voting. A knee injury suffered slipping on the rain-soaked Shea Stadium turf in June 1975 derailed his prime and led to the decade-long lawsuit Maddox v. City of New York, though he still reached the 1976 World Series with the Yankees against the Big Red Machine. He played 11 seasons for five clubs, converted to Judaism in 1975, and was later inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
