About Dick Lange
Richard Otto Lange broke in with the California Angels on September 9, 1972, and spent his entire four-year big-league career with the only organization that ever employed him — the club that took him in the 7th round of the 1970 draft out of Central Michigan University, where he was a three-year letterman. The right-hander worked mostly out of the bullpen, going 9-15 with a 4.47 ERA and 137 strikeouts over 70 games, his busiest season coming in 1974 when he made 18 starts. His 1975 Topps card, #114, caught him in his final big-league season; he pitched his last game that September 23 against the White Sox. Lange later became a case study in Douglas Gladstone's book on baseball's pension gap — the Angels removed him from the 40-man roster before the 1976 expansion draft, and a torn rotator cuff in 1977 ended his career one full season short of vesting. Central Michigan inducted him into its athletics hall of fame in 1987.
