About Joe Ferguson

The Dodgers drafted Ferguson out of the University of the Pacific in the eighth round of the 1968 draft. Ferguson debuted with Los Angeles in 1970 and became the club's regular catcher in 1973, batting .263 with a career-high 25 home runs and setting a major-league record for catchers with just three errors while leading NL backstops in fielding percentage and double plays. Prized for a cannon of a throwing arm, he also played right field and authored the signature play of the 1974 World Series, cutting in front of center fielder Jimmy Wynn to catch a deep fly ball and firing a strike home that nailed Sal Bando in Game 1; he added a two-run homer off Vida Blue in Game 2, the Dodgers' only win of that Series. Ferguson later caught for the Cardinals, Astros, and Angels around a return to Los Angeles, finishing 14 seasons with 122 home runs and a .358 on-base percentage, then coached the Dodgers to a championship in 1988.
